Children can easily catch colds and flu during the rainy season. For some children colds can easily come and go just like changes in the weather. Giving our kids proper medication and nutrition can help improve their condition or speed-up their recovery. Chicken Soup is our usual ally whenever one of our kids gets sick but there are also other soup dishes that can provide warmth and nourishment for our children. One such dish is the Sinigang na Salmon sa Miso.
The sour and salty taste of sinigang soup is a favorite in our household. My little girl loves to eat the veggies in the soup while my little boy would rather mix the veggies with meat or fish in the sinigang. Having their favorite soup dish served when they have colds makes it easier for them to eat even if their sense of taste isn’t working at its best. Sinigang na Salmon has plenty of benefits for the kids, the Salmon is packed with Omega 3, high in protein and vitamins. The soup also includes vegetables like tomatoes, radish, eggplant, and string beans which are also packed with nutrients. You also have the option to include mustard leaves (mustasa) or banana blossom (puso ng saging) in the soup.
Some people prefer to use the fish head only for this dish, but you may also go for the belly only or a combination of fish head and belly. Since my kids aren’t adept at picking out fish bones yet, I usually go for the salmon belly. The soft flesh of the fish is also easier to chew and swallow. Our vegetables also become a bit finely chopped, especially the radish, whenever the kids are ill so they can enjoy the food without exerting much effort in chewing.
Getting coughs, colds, fever and flu is part of growing up. Finding ways for our kids to enjoy their food despite their discomfort can show them how much we care. A simple bowl of hot soup can soothe their ailment and warm them up with our love.
